Diveristy Committee Update

As of May 1999, the Diversity Committee has a new chair, Russell Lim, MD. The Diversity Committee has as its mission to guide the AACP in addressing diversity issues in the areas of Programs, Membership, Training, Clinical Services, and Nominating. In addition, the Diversity Committee also has important Liaisons with the Black Psychiatry Association, the Hispanic Psychiatry Association, and the American Psychiatric Association (APA). The committee's relationship with the APA has developed into an informal liaison, with the appointment of Russell Lim, MD to be the informal liaison to the Council on Human Dignity and Professional Values. Dr. Lim will be attending meetings of the Council at the APA annual meeting in Chicago.

The Diversity Committee has also successfully sponsored many programs at the Institute for Psychiatric Services, the Winter Meeting of the AACP, and the APA annual meeting. This tradition continues with a symposium on "Psychiatry and Culturally Diverse Populations"; at the APA Annual meeting on Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at 2:00 P.M.

In an effort to increase the number of minority members, the Committee has sponsored ten free 1-year memberships to minority psychiatrists, many of whom stay on as members after the expiration of their first free year. The ten free memberships will be offered again this year to minority psychiatrists. If you would like to nominate a minority psychiatrist for a free membership, please send an email to, ucrfl@aol.com or fax it to (916) 567-4222 to the attention of Dr. Russell Lim.

Members of the Diversity Committee commend the Nominating committee for the successful nominations and elections of Jacqueline Feldman as President, Annelle Primm, as Vice President, and Mario Cruz and Debbie Carter to the AACP Board.

The committee would also like to start a list-serve, so that those members who are not on the board, or who do not attend committee meetings at the IPS, APA, and winter meeting, can participate via an e-mail discussion. Please check your general e-mails from the AACP for an announcement and directions on how to subscribe, or send an email to ucrfl@aol.com.

The next meeting of the Diversity Committee will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2000, at 6:15 P.M., in the Palmer House Hilton, Chicago, Illinois, prior to the APA Annual Meeting.
