Hunter L. McQuistion, MD

 Dr. McQuistion is Chief Medical Officer for Mental Hygiene Services in the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  Immediately prior to this appointment in January of 2003, he was Medical Director of Project Renewal, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in New York City offering comprehensive care for disabled homeless adults.  After gaining his medical degree from the Albany Medical College, he received his postgraduate psychiatric training was at NYU- Bellevue Medical Center, where he was also chief resident, subsequently completing the Fellowship in Public Psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University.  Dr. McQuistion is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, specializes in community psychiatry, and is on the Voluntary Faculty of the Public Psychiatry Fellowship at the New York State Psychiatric Institute.  At Mount Sinai, he currently co-leads its residency curriculum in social and community psychiatry.

 

He has published, presented, and widely taught on issues in community mental health and the care of underserved populations, especially as they concern advocacy, clinical engagement, psychiatric rehabilitation, substance abuse, and criminal justice issues.

Dr. McQuistion is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and is the Chair of its Committee on Poverty, Homelessness, and Psychiatric Disorders.  He has also served on the Board of Directors of NAMI-NYC Metro and is currently on its Advisory Board.
