Dr. Ronis received his
bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and MD from Case Western
Reserve University. He completed
his internship in Internal Medicine at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center
in Hartford Connecticut and residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland
from 1983-86. After serving four
years as the first fulltime psychiatrist in Marietta, Ohio he returned to CWRU
and University Hospitals where he established the PAL (Public Academic
Liaison) Program, a collaboration between the department of psychiatry and the
Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board for clinical services and
education. He completed an MPH
degree at the Ohio State University in 1995, and was a faculty fellow in a
National Institutes of Health-sponsored faculty development program in
alcoholism and other substance abuse from 1990 – 95. Since 1996 he has
served as Director of Residency Training and Vice Chair for Education.
Dr. Ronis has demonstrated
a commitment to psychiatric education and community psychiatry throughout his
career. At University Hospitals
he has served as vice chair for education, director of residency training, and
director of public psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry. He served a year as interim chief clinical officer of the
Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board and has served on the medical
advisory committee of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Metro Cleveland
since 1994. He has been active in the Cleveland Psychiatric Society as a
member of its executive board since 1994 and president in 1997-1998. His
involvement in community mental health has brought him special commendations
from the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Metro Cleveland, North East Ohio
Health Services, and the Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board.
He was recognized for distinguished service by the American Board of
Psychiatry and Neurology in 1997, and received an “Exemplary Psychiatrist”
award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in 2002. He has served
on several committees of the Ohio Psychiatric Association as well as its
treasurer and program chair, 1998 through 2000, president-elect, 2000-2001,
and president 2001-2002. Locally, his teaching has earned him the Department of
Psychiatry’s clinical teaching award in 1994 and the appreciation award from
the residents of the Department of Psychiatry in 1998 and 1999.
Dr. Ronis will be the L. Douglas Lenkoski, M.D.,
Associate Professor of Psychiatry for a five-year term contingent upon
continued full time service as a member of the faculty.
“Dr. Lenkoski has been a mentor and a role
model throughout my career,” said Ronis. “His community-mindedness and
keen understanding of the value of collaboration have guided my efforts in the
PAL Program and other community partnerships; and his pragmatic, humanistic
approach to patient care has influenced my work with students, residents,
patients and families. I am
particularly proud to be named the first L. Douglas Lenkoski professor."
